What is a C1 License?
What Is a C1 Licence, and Why Might You Need One?
A C1 licence allows you to drive vehicles weighing between 3.5 tonnes (3,500kg) and 7.5 tonnes (7,500kg). This is particularly relevant to motorhome owners, as some larger motorhomes fall into this weight category. Here's what you need to know:
Do You Already Have a C1 Licence?
Whether or not you have a C1 licence depends on when you passed your standard UK driving test:
-
Before 1 January 1997: If you passed your driving test before this date, you automatically have C1 entitlement on your licence. You can legally drive vehicles between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes without additional tests.
-
After 1 January 1997: If you passed your test after this date, you do not automatically have C1 entitlement. To drive a motorhome over 3.5 tonnes, you must complete an additional test to obtain a C1 licence.
Do You Need a C1 Licence?
The need for a C1 licence depends on the weight of the motorhome you intend to drive.
-
Motorhomes Under 3.5 Tonnes: Most motorhomes on the market today are designed to weigh under 3.5 tonnes. These vehicles can be driven on a standard Category B licence, which most drivers already have.
-
Motorhomes Over 3.5 Tonnes: If your motorhome exceeds 3.5 tonnes, a C1 licence is mandatory. This is often the case with larger motorhomes or those heavily equipped with additional features and storage.
